Students, staff raise $7,700 for American Heart Association
In recognition of American Heart Month, students at Michael A. Maroun Elementary School recently participated in several heart-healthy activities that concluded with a schoolwide celebration.
Throughout the month of February, students learned about healthy nutrition and exercise habits. In physical education class, they took on the Warrior Challenge, an obstacle course comprised of different cardiovascular exercises.
“They learned about Healthy Highways, how exercise effects the heart, and raised money for the American Heart Association all month long,” said MAM physical education teacher Alice Benjamin.
She noted that the students’ commitment to fundraising was “incredible.” Students, with contributions from family, teachers and community members, raised $7,709.03. Over the last nine years, the MAM community has raised $44,916.03 for the AHA.
To celebrate the fundraising accomplishment, the students who collected the most donations had an opportunity to turn their physical education teachers and principals into a spaghetti dinner. Students took handfuls of pasta, a ladle of sauce, meatballs, parmesan chees and Italian bread, and covered the teachers and principals from head to toe.
“It’s messy, but so worth it,” Benjamin said. “The students worked hard to raise money for a cause that is near and dear to me. We’re so proud of them and they deserve to celebrate.”
