New Regulations & Nutritional Standards Affecting Our Cafes
I will post information regarding the new regulations associated with the 2012 Reauthorization of the National School Breakfast & Lunch Programs (NSBP & NSLP) here as information is available.
The NSLP goes through a reauthorization process every 5 years. When the program is up for reauthorization, the government can make changes in our programs. Throughout this process we have worked with our State & National School Lunch Associations (NYSNA & SNA) & contacted our government officials to make our voices heard.
We are proud to say that many of the changes to the nutritional standards have already been in place here in Phoenix, as well as other local districts. As you probably know, we have been serving whole grain items for several years. Currently, most of our grain items are whole grains. Our milk selections are fat-free, 1/2% & 1%. Dairies are working on creating more flavors of fat-free, low sugar milk for us. Several years ago, we decreased the amount of sodium used in our menus. We are also happy to provide a variety of foods to students and staff daily, including fruits and vegetables. Fresh fruit is available daily.
We know how important it is that students accept and consume the healthier options available. Our School Nutrition staff work diligently to find creative and fun ways to get students excited about healthy choices.
Through our
we provide nutrition education, signage, theme days and more.
Thank you for supporting your school cafe!
